Viennese Medical School of the 18th and 19th centuries. Doctors as Jiří
Procháska (1749-1820), one of the first who studied the central nervous system;
Johannes Evangelista Purkinje (1787-1869), first to describe the fine terminal
net of the heart’s specific conducting tissue; Karl Rokitansky (1804-1878), who
did the first profound studies on congenital malformations; Joseph Škoda (1805-
1881), who taught how to interpret sounds of the heart and created the specialty
of cardiology; became part of medical history. They all shared the same
background, coming from the Czech speaking part of the old Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy, which consisted of many nationalities."
