Karl May published ‘Leïlet’, his first Oriental narrative, in 1876 in
‘Feierstunden am häuslichen Heerde’ (Leisure Time at the domestic Hearth),
using the pseudonym M. Gisela.
In 1877 a reprint appeared in Rosegger’s publication ‘Heimgarten’ (Home
Garden) by the title ‘Die Rose von Kahira’ (The Rose of Qahira).
The text’s first part was subsequently used in the ‘Orient Zyklus’ (Oriental
Odyssey) ‘Durch die Wüste’ (Through the Desert’).
I haven taken the liberty to change Karl May’s original title ‘Leïlet’ to its
correct Arabic spelling ‘Layla’.
It was the time when the Egyptian sun sent its rays with increased strength
to the languishing earth, and everyone without need to be outside under the open
sky withdrew to the protection of his roof, looking for rest and coolness. I, too,
lay on the soft Divan of my rented room, sipping aromatic Mocha and reveling in
the scent of the delightful Jabali streaming from my pipe. The solid, almost
windowless walls of the building held back some of the heat of the burning sun,
and the water evaporating from the porous vessels in the room made the
atmosphere tolerable enough that I felt little if any of the usual exhaustion
humans suffer at noontime.
