Jefferson City, the capital city of the State of Missouri and at the same time the county seat of Cole County, is situated on a charming hillside on the right bank of the Missouri River. It affords an interesting view of the river that flows by below, and of all the hustle and bustle on its waters. In those days the town had many fewer residents than now, but was still significant due to its location and the fact that sessions of the District Court were held there on a regular basis. There were also several large hotels that provided a decent place to stay and edible food for a good deal of money. However, I avoided those hotels because, on the one hand, I don’t like to stay in hotels in general and rather go where I can meet genuine people, and on the other hand, there was a place where one could live and eat very well for much less money. This place was Fire Street No. 15, at Mother Thick’s, the boardinghouse well known from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, and from Boston to San Francisco. No real Man of the West who ever came to Jefferson City passed it without taking a small or a big drink while also listening to the stories that were told by the hunters, trappers, or settlers who frequented it. Mother Thick’s Saloon was known as a place where you could get to know the Wild West without having to actually visit the “dark and bloody grounds.”
