Unbridged Translation of the Original Karl May Manuscript Published Under the Title Old Surehand 3

A Travel Narrative by Karl May

"How often did my companions and then later also the readers of my books
blame me that bad people, who treated us with nothing but hostility and were out
to harm us, received clemency and leniency from me once they had fallen into
our hands and we could have taken revenge on them! Every time this happened I
was objective enough to also look at those events from this other perspective, but
always found, as I do today, that I acted appropriately. There is a big difference
between punishment and revenge. A revengeful human is not a good human. His
actions are not only ignoble, but morally reprehensible. With no right to do so, he
forestalls divine and human justice, and by giving free rein to his egoism and
anger, shows only his pathetic weakness. Punishment, on the other hand, has to
be regarded completely differently. It is the natural and inevitable consequence of
each deed that is denounced by law and the voice of one’s conscience. However,
not just anybody -- not even the victims who have suffered -- should presume
that they have been appointed the judge. In one case it might be simply
inappropriate, and in another it might easily take on the character of an
objectionable act of revenge. Is there a man who can consider himself so pure, so
free of guilt, that he may deem himself judge of his neighbor’s deeds without
having been appointed by the authorities? "
