Red SimpsonTruckers MusicBorn on March 6, 1934 in Higley, AZ, Red Simpson was the youngest of 12 children raised in a musical family that relocated to Bakersfield during his childhood. During the Korean War, Red was stationed on the USS Repose where he formed a country group -- the Repose Ramblers. Upon his return to California, Red played numerous clubs including the Blackboard on weekends. In the 60's, Red's writing talents came to the forefront with Someone to Love and Gonna Have Love. In 1966, Ken Nelson asked Red to record some truck driving material for Capitol including Tommy Collins' Roll, Truck, Roll. Red followed up with Highway Patrol and Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves. In 1967, Buck Owens recorded Sam's Place penned by Red & himself. Shortly thereafter Red decided to focus on songwriting. During this period, Red wrote The Kansas City Song among other hits. In 1971, Red re-entered the recording studio to cut I'm a Truck for Portland which was picked up by Capitol and hit the top spot on Cashbox. The single and the chart are on display at the Kern County Museum in Bakersfield. Red then rejoined Capitol and released Country Western Truck Drivin' Singer, Awful Lot to Learn About Truck Drivin' and Truckin' Trees for Christmas. Following his tenure with Capitol, Red closed out the 70's cutting Truck Driver's Heaven, Truck Driver Man and Wife, and The Flying Saucer Man and the Truck Driver. In the 1995, Red re-entered the studio to record a pair of duets with Junior Brown -- Semi Crazy and Nitro Express. Although Red no longer tours, he performs frequently in the Bakersfield area including a regular Monday night gig at Trout's in Oildale. Red's most recent release is Hey, Bin Laden.
