"It was about noon on a very hot June day when the “Dogfish”, one of the
largest passenger and cargo steamers on the Arkansas, whipped the waters of the
river with its mighty paddle wheels. It had left Little Rock earlier this morning
and was soon to arrive in Lewisburg and would tie up there if additional
passengers or cargo was to be had.
The oppressive heat had driven the better-off travelers to their cabins. Most
of the deck passengers lay behind barrels, crates and other luggage pieces
affording them a bit of shade. Underneath a spread tarp, the captain had set up a
bar table for these passengers. On it stood an assortment of glasses and bottles,
whose burning contents were certainly not intended for discriminating palates.
Behind the bar sat a barkeep with eyes closed, tired from the heat, his head
nodding. If his lids opened at times, a quiet curse or other strong word crossed
his lips. His annoyance was addressed to a group of about twenty men sitting in a
circle on the floor in front of the table, passing a dice box from hand to hand.
They played for a round of drinks that the loser had to buy for every participant
at the end of a game. Because of that, the barkeep was denied his nap he so
dearly desired"
