"It was in the early hours of a warm, beautiful and promising spring day. A
beloved sunbeam gazed through my window and said: “Grüβ Dich Gott! ‘God
greets you!’” when Herzle walked upstairs from the first floor to bring the
morning mail that the postman had just delivered. She sat down opposite me, a
routine that was repeated a number of times in the course of the day, as often as
mail arrived, and opened the first envelopes, to present their contents to me.
But before she could begin with this task, the following question and
argument forms in my mind: who is Herzle? No one’s actually named like that.
This has to be a pet name. And, yes, it is! ‘Herzle’ is not the physical, but rather
the psychic image of my wife. It originated in one of my earlier writings where I
used many of these ‘le’ diminutives. While I was building this portrait, learning
to love it, I came to call it ‘Herzle’. And so it was gradually transferred to the
physical being also. But not in all cases. When there are clouds in the sky—
always my fault—I call her ‘Klara’. The clouds dissipate, I call her ‘Klaerchen’.
The clouds gone, I call her ‘Herzle’. My wife, though, always calls me ‘Herzle’,
since she never causes clouds. "
